Michigan State has received a third commitment from a running back via the transfer portal, adding former Iowa running back Jazion Patterson. He announed his pledge to the Spartans on Jan. 8.

Patterson will have one year of eligibility remaining after being a redshirt junior for the Hawkeyes in 2025. Patterson is a strong blocker in the passing game and a powerful runner, who has 195 career rushes with 858 yards gained (4.4 yards per carry) and four touchdowns.

In 10 games in 2025, Patterson rushed for 60 times for 296 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and added three receptions for nine yards. According to Pro Football Focus, he played 119 offensive snaps and earned an overall offensive grade of 77.1.

The 2024 season was Patterson's best rushing season, statistically. He recorded 63 rushing attempts for 309 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. He also scored two two rushing touchdowns in 2023.

While with the Hawkeyes, Patterson played for an Iowa coaching staff that included LeVar Woods as the special teams coordinator. Woods will now serve as Michigan State's assistant head coach and special teams coordinator in 2026. Additionally, Iowa punter Rhys Dakin is making the transition from Iowa City to East Lansing and will suit up for the Spartans this coming season as well.

Patterson figures to be in a running back rotation with previous transfer commits Cam Edwards (UConn) and Marvis Parrish (Western Kentucky), as well as returners Jace Clarizio, Brandon Tullis, Bryson Williams, and Zion Gist.

Given Patterson's skill set as a blocker, one could expect to see him in on passing downs, but not totally tipping the offense's hand as the 5-foot-10, 210 pounds. Patterson is a talented rusher as well.

He originally hails from Deerfield Beach, Florida and was a three-star prospect coming out of high school per 24/7 Sports.

Patterson won the Iowa Team Hustle Award in 2024 and the Coaches Appreciation Award in 2025, indicating he will be a valued addition to the Spartans' locker room next season.
