Michigan State has received another transfer portal commitment, this time from former Connecticut running back Cam Edwards. Edwards is an experienced running back who can bring a physical edge MSU has always had in its rushing game.

Edwards will play his final season of college football eligibility under head coach Pat Fitzgerald, offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan running backs coach Devon Spalding and the rest of the new MSU staff.

Edwards — who was a preseason candidate for the 2025 Doak Walker Award and a Shrine Bowl 1,000 — visited MSU on Jan. 5, after his visit with Louisville a day prior. He also visited Colorado.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound running back spent four years at UConn, and recorded 480 rushing attempts for 2,690 yards (5.6 yards per attempt) and 27 touchdowns in 36 career games played. Edwards also tallied 47 receptions for 467 yards and four additional touchdowns. He redshirted in his true freshman year in 2022.

Edwards was not always a running back, as he was initially recruited to UConn as a defensive back before moving positions during the midpoint of his freshman year. Quickly finding success at his new position Edwards led the team in rushing in all three seasons he played the position.

In 2025, Edwards had a standout season. He rushed for 1,140 on 210 attempts (5.9 yards per carry) and scored 14 rushing touchdowns. He was the first UConn player since 2019 to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season.

In the 2024 season, Edwards played all 13 games and amassed 830 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. In 2023, he appeared in nine games and recorded 618 rushing yards and four rushing scores.

Edwards will look to continue his success in the Big Ten conference and will be a strong addition to MSU’s offense in 2026.

Edwards joins his former teammate at UConn, offensive tackle Ben Murawski, as a transfer portal pledge for Michigan State.

In addition to Edwards and Murawski, the Spartans have received commitments from North Dakota State transfer offensive lineman Trent Fraley, Auburn transfer linebacker Caleb Wheatland, Houston Christian transfer defensive back Tyran Chappell, Maine transfer defensive back Devin Vaught, Louisiana Tech transfer defensive Michael Richard, Iowa State transfer defensive back Tre Bell, South Carolina transfer offensive guard Nick Sharpe, Central Florida transfer quarterback Cam Fancher, Iowa transfer punter Rhys Dakin and Charlotte transfer kicker Liam Boyd thus far.

Also of note, Edwards played with running back Nate Carter at UConn for one season in 2022. Carter transferred to Michigan State for the 2023 and 2024 seasons before going on to play for the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL.
