Former Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby denied entry to NFL Supplemental Draft
Brendan Sorsby tries to gamble on himself for a shot at the NFL
It’s been six months since Sorsby announced his transfer to Texas Tech after his breakout year in
2025 with the Bearcats. Since then, it’s been a downward spiral for him. Brendan Sorsby got
caught violating the NCAA’s sports wagering regulations and placed over 9,000 sports bets,
totaling about $90,000. Despite the Lubbock County Court Judge granting him a temporary
injunction, Sorsby opted to part ways with Texas Tech and bet on himself in the Supplemental
Draft. However, the cards weren't in his favor.
The NFL denied Sorsby a Supplemental Draft. According to Pete Thamel and Adam Schefter,
“league officials said they believed it would ultimately become a distraction to teams as they
begin training camps.” The decision ultimately came down to the rights of the Collective
Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Had Sorsby been granted a Supplemental Draft, his Pro Day would’ve begun on July 10, not that
far away. 26 NFL Teams had already expressed their interest in adding him to their QB room,
according to Sorsby’s Agent. The most notable teams to watch for are the Pittsburgh Steelers,
Cleveland Browns, and the New York Jets. Both the Browns and Jets still have major question
marks at quarterback in 2026, but for Pittsburgh, they’re looking ahead with Aaron Rodgers retiring after
this season. Perhaps, with a year of guidance under him, he could be their long-term solution.
During his two years with the Bearcats, Sorsby has thrown for over 5600 yards and 45 touchdowns in the
air. He’s praised for his mobility and improvisation, which allows him to extend plays and bring
versatility to an offensive scheme. He has good zip on the ball and is capable of delivering it
under pressure, and is known for his good accuracy in short and intermediate range. His biggest
concern will be his arm strength and mechanics. Can it transition to an NFL level? Who knows.
Sorsby no doubt has raw talent, and he would benefit more from an extra year in college but it seems that door is closed.
Sorsby is eligible for the 2027 NFL Draft, but will the NFL allow him to be apart of the draft next season?
Can he abandon his gambling habits and put the off-season behind him? The October 24th game against Texas Tech won't hit the same without Sorsby, unless Tech is still trying to die on the Sorsby hill.
