Jerrod Calhoun and the Cincinnati Bearcats have secured a commitment from 2027 four-star guard Josh Tyson.

Moments ago, Cincinnati native Joshua Tyson announced his commitment to the University of Cincinnati, in front of family and friends at Lakota West High School.

Tyson officially visited the University of Cincinnati this past weekend, where he spent the weekend back in Cincinnati for the first time following his departure for perennial powerhouse La Lumiere, which is where he will play his senior season.

He will now join longtime friend and four-star wing Kam Mercer, as the lone members of the 2027 recruiting class. Worth noting, Mercer and Tyson both played on the same AAU circuit growing up and have since become lifelong friends.

Now for Tyson, he is currently ranked as the 54th player in the 2027 class according to 247 sports, and the 4th ranked player in the State of Indiana. However, he is ranked the 12th ranked guard in the country amongst the 2027 class.

The 6’2” combo guard spent the first three years of his career at Lakota West where he became one of the most talented players in the State of Ohio. Tyson, helped Lakota West reach a final four his sophomore season. He was also a crucial piece of the Firebirds elite eight run a season ago.

Tyson led the Firebirds in 2025-2026 where he averaged 16 points, four assists, and four rebounds, on a 63% clip as a junior. Worth noting, Tyson was named the Greater Miami Conference Athlete of the year after a dominant junior season, picking up first team all-conference honors.

However, for Tyson, he impacts the game on both sides of the floor as well. He is an elite defender, with quick hands and length for a guard. He averaged two steals a game as a junior in the GMC, but after watching many of his games throughout his junior season, the thing that really sticks out to me about Tyson’s game is his motor. He can quickly take over a game in a matter of seconds to say the least.

Cincinnati head coach Jerrod Calhoun quickly made Tyson a priority target in the 2027 class after being hired by the Bearcats back in March. The crafty point guard told TFON back in May, that Cincinnati head coach Jerrod Calhoun reached out to Tyson within 48 hours of taking the Cincinnati opening with hopes of keeping the local point guard in Ohio.

“Coach Calhoun and his staff had great energy while I was on my visit,” Tyson told TFON in May. “He is such a great coach with a winning background. His teams like to play fast and that is something that I really like to do as well. “

Now for Calhoun, this is the first time in his career that he was able to secure two top 100 prospects in a single recruiting cycle.

Worth noting, that Tyson chose Cincinnati over programs like Xavier, Michigan State, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Penn State, West Virginia, Ohio State and more.
