Trey Fort’s Last Go-Round: How faith, family, and film have shaped MSU Basketball’s newest Spartan

When Trey Fort steps inside the four lines of the Breslin Center, there’s a visible sense of peace in his posture. He looks comfortable in his green and white practice jersey, sitting back in a chair, speaking nostalgically after practice Thursday evening.

For him, basketball has never been just a game - it’s a reflection of faith, perseverance, and gratitude. Now under the tutelage of Tom Izzo, Fort understands exactly where he is and what it’s taken to get here.

“In practice, in film, and anytime we’re in this atmosphere, in these four lines right here, it’s a great time to be in the green and white,” he said, smiling.

This season marks Fort’s final chapter in college basketball - his “last go-round,” as he calls it - and he’s approaching it with the urgency of someone who refuses to waste a second.

“I have to be locked in at all times,” Fort said. “I can’t take anything for granted, can’t take anything lightly. Every practice, every possession, everything is serious, and I have to give it my all. I can’t afford to take a play off.”

That mindset has been molded by experience. Fort’s journey has been a winding one - from academy basketball to junior college, to a mid-major, then Mississippi State in the SEC, and now to the Big Ten. Few players have seen as much of the basketball world as Fort has, and even fewer have stayed grounded through it all.

He credits that to his faith.

“My faith, man,” he said, pausing for a moment. “I just trust and believe in God, and that’s got me this far. I just stay consistent, do my part, and let the results be the results. I just make sure I don’t leave anything out there, that I don’t leave with any regrets.”
