Michigan State men's basketball building serious momentum on recruiting trail

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo is as rejuvenated as ever when it comes to recruiting.

With the early signing period for the 2026 class in Division I men's basketball quickly approaching, as it opens on Nov. 12, the Michigan State men's basketball program is building some serious momentum on the recruiting trail.

At age 70, MSU head coach Tom Izzo appears to be just as motivated as he was earlier in his career with his recruiting efforts. A rejuvenated Izzo has traveled the country throughout the past several months to build relationships with prospects and their coaches and families, and this has helped him earn commitments from priority recruits. Izzo has been assisted by his staff — associate head coach Doug Wojcik, assistant coach Saddi Washington, assistant coach Thomas Kelley, assistant coach Jon Borovich and assistant coach Austin Thornton, among others — throughout the process.

The Spartans already have commitments in the 2026 class from priority four-star point guard Carlos Medlock Jr. and four-star power forward Julius Avent. Both players rank as top-80 prospects nationally. Medlock committed to MSU in late July, while Avent pledged in early October. However, the Spartans are far from done in this recruiting cycle.

Sources tell Spartans Illustrated that Michigan State is trending for two more priority prospects.
