Kicker Liam Boyd is finding his fit at Michigan State with a perfectionist mindset
MSU kicker Liam Boyd discusses his journey to East Lansing after transferring from Charlotte, his transition from soccer to football, and the mindset that drives his pursuit of consistency and perfection during spring practices.
Michigan State kicker Liam Boyd didn’t hesitate when asked what stood out most during his transition into the program. Boyd is a transfer from Charlotte, who also spent time at Clemson and North Carolina. While he is still settling into his new environment in East Lansing, the answer as to why he chose the Spartans came down to a good fit, strong relationships and a standard of excellence that already existed.
Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald and assistant head coach special teams coordinator LeVar Woods made the decision pretty easy for Boyd to come to MSU.
“Just getting a fit and all that stuff,” Boyd said on Tuesday. “In the portal, I heard from Coach Woods … I have a great relationship with him.”
Boyd’s path to Michigan State was shaped by connections. Through his relationship with Woods and ties to Iowa kicker Drew Stevens (who played under Woods with the Hawkeyes), Boyd was introduced to a Michigan State program with a reputation that immediately caught his attention. As he dug deeper, that reputation, especially on special teams, became a major factor in his decision.
“It seemed like a great marriage of a top coordinator and a program with a really good pedigree for what I do,” Boyd said.
