Despite questions about his future, Jonathan Smith reflects on the season that was and focuses on resilience of his team
Jonathan Smith answers questions on his future and on his Michigan State team that continued to battle each week.
It was a victory that gave Michigan State fans something to celebrate at the very end of a challenging season. The Spartans closed the year with a win, highlighted by some gritty performances and moments of resilience. But as the players left the field and the locker room settled into postgame reflection, all eyes remained on one question: will Jonathan Smith be back as head coach next season?
Smith himself didn’t have an answer.
“Don’t have that,” he said bluntly when asked if he knew whether he would return. The question has hung over East Lansing for weeks, yet even in the face of uncertainty, Smith stayed focused on the game and the accomplishments of his team.
“Really proud of that locker room. Been through a lot, right? A long season. Some downs, some disappointment, definitely frustration. But really proud of them as they continued to battle,” Smith said. “I’m so happy for them to come out with a win like they did.”
The game itself was a back-and-forth affair. Michigan State built a halftime lead thanks to a critical defensive fourth-down stop and a two-minute drill executed perfectly by quarterback Allesio Milivojevic, giving the Spartans a 24–7 advantage at the break. Smith reminded his players that more scoring would be necessary, but the energy carried into the second half.
Then came the defining moment: Alante Brown returning a kickoff for a touchdown.
“For what he’s battled through — overcoming the early setback physically, not being able to play — for him to not go down and take that back was a huge lift for our sideline,” Smith said. It was more than just a big play; it was a symbol of the resilience the Spartans displayed all season, even amid inconsistency and disappointment.
Even as the celebration unfolded, Smith acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the program and the conversation about his future. Asked whether it’s fair to be at the end of the season without knowing whether he or his staff would return, he answered thoughtfully:
“I don’t know what’s fair. I think you evaluate a complete year. In this day and age… the guys continued to go, and we came out on top tonight.”
