
Ben Roberts embraces veteran role as Michigan State rebuilds culture under new staff
After an injury-shortened season, the redshirt senior is helping drive a defensive reset in East Lansing
Last season tested Michigan State defensive lineman Ben Roberts in ways that went beyond the box score. Injuries forced him to miss five games, and a second setback against Michigan ended his season entirely, sidelining him for the final four.
Even so, Roberts never drifted from the program during the recovery process. The support around him – particularly from teammates – became a constant as he worked his way back from a significant knee injury.
“I kind of felt my knee pop, kind of knew it was over,” Roberts said. “But I mean, shout out to my teammates, shout out to the team for keeping me up and uplifting me every day. Wouldn’t be here without those guys on the team, so shout out to them.”
That support system may look different now following a coaching change, but one familiar presence has helped steady the transition. Defensive coordinator Joe Rossi has quickly established credibility with a group that is looking for direction and energy.
