Wednesday War Room: Five Things We Learned About Oregon Through Four Games

The bye week arrives at an interesting place on Oregon’s schedule because four games have given us enough evidence to begin separating what this team actually is from what we thought it might be in August. There have already been two very different kinds of tests, from games Oregon could control with its talent to the loss against Oklahoma State and then the trip to Los Angeles, where everything changed the moment Dante Moore went down.

That makes this a useful week to step away from preparing for an opponent and look inward. Some of what Oregon showed through the first month is encouraging, some of it remains incomplete and a few things have changed significantly since fall camp. More than anything, the first four games have started to reveal where this team’s ceiling really sits.

Oregon’s ceiling is still tied to how explosive the passing game can become

There was a tendency entering the season to believe Oregon’s offense would be built from the inside out. The offensive line had experience, the running back room was deep and Moore appeared capable of managing an offense that did not necessarily need him to carry it. Four games later, I am not sure that is actually the best version of this team.

The USC game offered the clearest evidence yet. Oregon and USC finished with the same 35% offensive success rate, which means the Ducks were not consistently winning more downs. What separated them was the value created when Oregon did win. Twelve explosive plays produced 329 yards, compared with USC gaining 276 on 14, and Oregon averaged 10.5 sack-adjusted yards per pass attempt. The Ducks were not simply completing passes. They were changing the geometry of the game.

That matters because Oregon has enough receiving talent to make defenses pay for concentrating too heavily on the box. Jamari Johnson’s return gave the offense another player capable of winning vertically and after the catch. Evan Stewart remains one of the most reliable options on the roster, while Dakorien Moore has already shown that his speed can change a possession with one play. Dierre Hill Jr. adds another dimension because his receiving ability allows Oregon to create explosive plays without necessarily throwing the football 25 yards downfield.

What happened after Dylan Raiola entered against USC may have been the most revealing part. The Ducks did not become conservative. They did not collapse the passing game into a handful of safe throws designed to protect the backup quarterback. Oregon continued attacking multiple levels of the field, and Raiola rewarded that confidence by completing 19 of 25 for 289 yards and two touchdowns.

That is probably where the ceiling of this offense exists. Oregon can run the football well enough to punish defenses that become too light, but the Ducks become much harder to defend when the passing game is forcing every defender to account for the entire field. Whether Moore returns quickly or Raiola has to carry the offense for a stretch, Oregon’s path to becoming an elite offense probably runs through the quarterback and receiver rooms more than it does through simply trying to overpower people.

The offensive line has improved, but the run game still has an identity problem

The offensive line has quietly become one of the more interesting developments of the first month because its biggest improvement has come in an area that does not always attract much attention when things are going well. Oregon’s quarterbacks attempted 35 passes against USC and were not sacked once. More importantly, the offense never appeared afraid to continue pushing the ball downfield because of protection concerns.

That is real progress from where things appeared to be heading earlier in the season. Oregon's line has become considerably more dependable in pass protection, and that has allowed the offense to use more of the field. The USC game may have been the first time all season where the offensive line simply stopped being a major part of the story, and for that position group that is usually a compliment.

The running game is more complicated. Oregon and USC finished with identical 42% rushing success rates, while the Ducks had 21% of their runs stuffed and converted only four of seven power-running opportunities. Jordon Davison’s 45-yard run on Oregon’s first possession was terrific, but his other 15 carries produced 21 yards. That does not mean Oregon cannot run the football. It means there is still a significant difference between Oregon running from a neutral situation and Oregon lining up in an obvious rushing situation and telling the defense exactly what is coming.

We saw that most clearly near the goal line before halftime at USC. Oregon repeatedly added bodies to the formation and tried to create movement straight ahead, yet USC was able to key the run and stop it. The better adjustment came later when Oregon began using Hill on the perimeter and treating the quick passing game almost like an extension of its rushing attack. The defense had to widen, and suddenly the field looked different.

That may ultimately be the answer. Oregon does not necessarily need an old-fashioned identity where everyone in the stadium knows a run is coming and the Ducks prove they can gain four yards anyway. The identity may be creating enough horizontal and vertical stress that defenses cannot devote extra bodies to the run without creating a problem somewhere else. The offensive line looks increasingly capable of supporting that kind of offense. The question is whether Oregon can become more efficient when it does need to move someone against his will.

The defense is creating more disruption, but finishing plays is still the next step

There is a difference between affecting an offense and stopping it, and Oregon spent much of the USC game living somewhere between those two things.

The Ducks finished with two sacks, four quarterback hurries and nine pass breakups against an offense that entered the game among the nation's most efficient. Matayo Uiagalelei and Bear Alexander recorded the sacks, Teitum Tuioti repeatedly created pressure and several members of the secondary got their hands on footballs. Those are encouraging signs because Oregon was not simply sitting back and hoping Jayden Maiava would make mistakes.

The frustration came when the first victory within a play did not become the final one. Oregon would move Maiava off his spot, force him into a scramble or make him reset, only to see a receiver uncover after the play extended. A good third-down snap would become a fourth-down conversion. A pressure that looked like it should end the possession would become another opportunity for USC.

That is how the Trojans could convert only two of 11 third downs and still score on five consecutive meaningful possessions. Oregon was doing much of what a defense wants to do before the snap reached its conclusion, but the Ducks were not consistently collecting the reward. USC converting four of five fourth downs turned potentially successful Oregon possessions into extended drives.

The late fourth-down stop was important because it showed what happens when all of those pieces finally connect. Pressure affected Maiava, Brandon Finney Jr. finished the play in coverage and Oregon took possession in USC territory. The offense then used more than five minutes and scored a touchdown. One finished defensive play essentially changed the rest of the game.

This defense is closer than it looked after Oklahoma State, but “closer” is not the same thing as finished. The front is generating more disruption. The secondary is contesting more throws. Devon Jackson continues to be active in the middle of the defense, and the young defensive backs are increasingly comfortable challenging receivers. The next step is turning those pressures, breakups and favorable down-and-distance situations into punts rather than simply another snap.

Oregon has already shown it can survive adversity without losing its identity

This may be the most important thing Oregon showed during the first four games because it is also the thing that is hardest to measure in August.

Dan Lanning spent much of fall camp talking about wanting the team to become more player-led. Coaches can create structure, establish expectations and prepare players for situations, but eventually a season puts a team into circumstances nobody can fully script. The USC game became one of those moments when Moore remained on the turf following the hit by Desman Stephens II.

There were several ways that situation could have changed the game. Oregon could have lost its composure. The emotion surrounding the play could have turned the night into a series of retaliation penalties. The offense could have become dramatically more conservative once Raiola entered. The sideline could have become consumed by concern about Moore rather than the football game still being played.

Instead, Lanning gathered the entire team around him while Moore was being attended to, and Oregon came out of that moment looking remarkably composed. Raiola entered and the offense continued operating. The defense eventually found the stop it needed. Most importantly, the Ducks did not allow what happened to Moore to become permission to lose control of everything that happened afterward.

That response matters because the season had already delivered another kind of adversity. Oklahoma State exposed weaknesses and removed whatever margin for error Oregon thought it had entering the year. The Portland State game could not answer whether Oregon had actually learned anything from that loss because the talent difference was simply too large. USC could.

What Oregon showed in Los Angeles was not perfection. The Ducks were tied at 27 in the fourth quarter and had spent much of the game unable to get USC off the field when it mattered most. But when the game reached its most difficult point, Oregon did not look overwhelmed by the moment. That says something different about a team than simply blowing out an opponent.

Lanning has talked repeatedly about response as one of the things that defines a football team. Through four games, Oregon has already had to prove it understands what that means.

The depth is real, but the next month will show whether it is championship-level depth

Every coach talks about depth in August because August is when almost everyone is healthy. The more revealing question comes when the season begins taking pieces away.

Raiola provided the most obvious example against USC. There is a significant difference between believing the backup quarterback is talented and watching him enter a road game after a frightening injury to the starter and immediately operate the offense without hesitation. Raiola had said before the season that he was preparing as though anything could happen. Saturday night proved that was more than the standard backup-quarterback answer.

But quarterback is not the only place where Oregon’s depth has mattered. The running back room has already needed different players to take on different roles. Hill has become far more than a conventional ball carrier because of what he can do as a receiver. Davison provides a different type of runner. At receiver, Oregon was able to survive Johnson missing time because Stewart, Dakorien Moore and others carried larger roles, then immediately became more dangerous once Johnson returned.

The defensive side may be even more important. Brandon Finney Jr., Ify Obidegwu and Na’eem Offord have all had meaningful responsibilities in the secondary, while Oregon continues rotating enough bodies on the defensive front to avoid asking one or two players to carry the entire workload. Devon Jackson has become increasingly important at linebacker, but the overall structure has not depended upon only one group of starters remaining healthy.

That is what real roster depth looks like. The harder question is whether it is championship depth.

There is a difference between having a talented second-team player and having a second-team player who can enter a high-leverage Big Ten game without forcing the coaching staff to change what it wants to do. Raiola did that at USC. Several of Oregon’s defensive backs are beginning to do it. The next month will reveal whether that same standard exists across enough of the roster.

The bye arrives at the right time because Oregon does not simply need rest. It needs an honest inventory of what the first four games have revealed. The Ducks have shown they can create explosive offense, protect the quarterback, disrupt opposing offenses and absorb the kind of adversity that can derail a season. They have also shown that the power run game remains inconsistent, defensive pressure does not always become a finished play and some of the depth that looked impressive in August still needs to prove itself when the stakes rise.

Four games are not enough to define a season.

They are enough to tell us what questions matter next.
