Trav’s Ten Takeaways: Iowa
Sappington:
How could we start anywhere else? A day of kicking I never thought I’d see in my lifetime. I have long dreaded a kick like this to win a game, but the day finally came and I watched it while laying on the floor. Sappington finished 3/3 and none of them were gimmies. We’ll see what shakes out moving forward, but we actually won a game because of our kicker and that’s enough to give him the top spot on the takeaways. Good on you Sir Atticus.
True Hell of a Win:
Outside of the kicking game, it was a really gutsy win. Although we talked all week about avoiding it, it was a true Iowa game and we were the tougher, better team for a majority of the game. I’m sure there was a part of Dan that appreciated going in there and winning a game like that after people continue to question whether Oregon is a soft team. We are now 7-0 in time zone travel games in the last two years and undefeated on the road. Additionally, I often don’t worry too much about the refs, but that was atrocious. Iowa finished the game with zero penalties and there were game-changing calls and no-calls. Specifically, the OPI on McClellan was terrible and ended a drive for us, the DPI on Ify was literally nothing, Benson was held on the pass to the end zone with 11 seconds left and most importantly, Gronowski should have definitely been called for grounding on 3rd and Goal. When was the last time a team got called for holding against us?
