The easy take all offseason about the first game has been that Oregon is 1-3 in its last four games with Boise State and that the one win was a nail-biter that required two big special teams returns to squeak out the victory.
That part is true. Oregon has never beaten Boise State comfortably. In fact, until Noah Whittington’s 100-yard kickoff return and Tez Johnson’s 85-yard punt return helped turn the 2024 game, Oregon had never beaten the Broncos at all.
But the reality is that these two teams are light years different two years later, and comparing the 2026 Oregon team to the 2009 team is fool’s gold. That was multiple coaches ago for both programs, before NIL, before the transfer portal became what it is today and before roster construction tilted so heavily toward the Power Four schools. Sure, Boise State is now a member of the reconstituted Pac-12, but the truth is that this version of the Pac is much closer to an enhanced version of the old Mountain West than the conference Oregon left behind.
Thinking back through all of that history this week took me back to a Tegan and Sara song I had not thought about in a while: Walking With a Ghost. The more I thought about it, the more it felt like a pretty good description of the way this matchup has been discussed for the last month.
We are all still walking with the ghosts of Boise State games past. The blue turf. Kellen Moore. The 2008 loss at Autzen. The Las Vegas Bowl. Even the uncomfortable night two years ago when Oregon needed two special teams touchdowns to finally beat the Broncos. Those memories are real, and if you lived through them as an Oregon fan, it is hard not to carry at least a little of them into Saturday.
But ghosts are memories, not scouting reports. They can shape how we feel about a game without telling us much of anything about the game that is actually about to be played. And when I started digging into the numbers and looking at what Boise State was in those previous meetings compared with what Oregon was at the time, that distinction became even harder to ignore.
Those Boise State teams were different, too
There is another part of the history that tends to get lost whenever somebody throws Oregon’s 1-3 record against Boise State onto the screen.
Boise State was really good. The 2008 game is remembered through an Oregon lens because Boise State walked into Autzen and won 37-32. Look at those teams through a modern analytical lens, though, and it does not resemble some enormous upset. Game on Paper’s opponent-adjusted numbers have Boise State finishing that season No. 9 nationally in net adjusted EPA per play. Oregon finished No. 18.
That is a pretty significant piece of context. Boise State was not just a plucky underdog catching Oregon on the right Saturday. By the numbers, the Broncos were one of the better teams in college football and actually had the stronger overall statistical profile. A year later, Oregon went to Boise and lost 19-8 in Chip Kelly’s first game as head coach. That night has lived forever because of the score, Oregon’s miserable offensive performance and everything that happened afterward, but it is worth remembering what Boise State became that season.
The Broncos went 14-0, won the Fiesta Bowl and finished No. 4 in the country. They were not playing Cinderella in 2009. They were one of the best teams in college football.
The advanced numbers tell a similar story. Oregon finished that season around No. 20 nationally in net adjusted EPA per play, with Boise State right there in the same neighborhood. At that point in time, these were much more comparable football programs than most people probably remember now.
Oregon was about to explode under Kelly and begin its climb toward becoming one of college football’s national brands. Boise State had already become the sport’s best outsider.
That relationship simply does not exist anymore.
Even 2017 tells us almost nothing
The 2017 Las Vegas Bowl belongs in the record book, but I am not sure why anyone would use it to predict what happens Saturday. Oregon entered that game 7-5 after Willie Taggart had already left for Florida State. Mario Cristobal was serving as interim head coach. Boise State was 10-3, had just won the Mountain West championship and was ranked No. 25. The Broncos won 38-28.
Oregon finished that season only No. 37 in adjusted EPA margin. It was a program between coaches, still trying to figure out what came next and nowhere close to having the roster construction or organizational stability Oregon has today.
Nobody would look at that Oregon team and say it represents what Dan Lanning will put on the field Saturday. Yet every time we bring up the 1-3 record, that loss is treated as another piece of evidence that Boise State somehow presents Oregon with a unique problem. It is history. It is not predictive history. There is a difference.
Even 2024 is becoming a shaky comparison
The more reasonable argument is to throw out 2008, 2009 and 2017 and look at what happened two years ago. That one, at least, involved Lanning. It involved many of the same systems Oregon still uses today. It happened at Autzen. Boise State came within a field goal of beating Oregon, and the Ducks needed two enormous special teams plays to survive 37-34. But even that comparison starts falling apart once you look closely at who Boise State was.
That Broncos team was excellent.
Ashton Jeanty was not simply a very good running back who happened to give Oregon trouble. He finished the season with 2,601 yards from scrimmage, became the centerpiece of a Boise State team that reached the College Football Playoff and gave the Broncos an offensive identity that forced every opponent to build its defensive plan around him. Boise State finished that season No. 29 nationally in net adjusted EPA per play, with an offense that ranked among the better units in the country. The Broncos were also one of the nation's best teams in success-rate margin. That was a legitimate football team.
Oregon was also still figuring itself out. The Ducks eventually became the undefeated Big Ten champions, but anyone who watched those first two games remembers that September Oregon did not yet look anything like the team we saw later in the season. The offensive line was unsettled. The offense had not found its rhythm. Oregon survived Idaho by 10 points one week and Boise State by three the next. Then the Ducks figured it out.
The Boise State team coming to Autzen Saturday does not have Jeanty standing next to Maddox Madsen. And the numbers since his departure matter.
Boise State took a step backward
Boise State remained a good football team last season. Danielson did not suddenly forget how to coach, and the Broncos still won nine games. But the statistical profile changed significantly.
After finishing No. 29 nationally in adjusted EPA margin in 2024, Boise State fell to roughly the mid-60s nationally last season. The biggest change came on offense, where the Broncos dropped from a top-20 opponent-adjusted EPA unit during the Jeanty season to outside the top 80 the following year. That is not a small movement.
It does not mean Boise State cannot move the ball Saturday. It does mean the offense Oregon is preparing to defend is statistically a long way from the one that walked into Autzen two years ago with the eventual Heisman Trophy runner-up carrying the football. Madsen is experienced. Boise State has skill players who can make plays, and Danielson’s teams have generally been physical and disciplined.
But Boise State now has to manufacture offense in a much more conventional way.
Oregon gets to respond with a defense built very differently than the one Boise State saw even two years ago.
Oregon has moved the other direction
This is probably the biggest reason I have trouble using any previous Oregon-Boise State game as a predictor for Saturday. Oregon has become something it was not in 2008, 2009 or 2017, and there is an argument that this roster is deeper than the one Boise State saw in 2024. The Ducks followed that 2024 season by finishing last year No. 6 nationally in opponent-adjusted EPA margin. Oregon ranked inside the top 10 nationally in adjusted EPA on offense and around the top 10 defensively.
Now look at how the analytical models view Oregon entering this season. SP+ projects Oregon as one of the best teams in the country, with a profile that puts the Ducks near the top nationally on both sides of the football. Oregon is not being modeled as a really good team hoping everything breaks correctly. It is being modeled as one of the handful of teams with enough balance, depth and high-end talent to realistically contend for a national championship. That is the part Oregon’s historical record against Boise State cannot capture.
The Ducks can lose Saturday. Of course they can. Turn the ball over three times, give up explosive plays, lose special teams snaps or allow Boise State to turn the game into the kind of fourth-quarter fight where one bounce decides everything, and those advantages become much less important. College football has never become predictable enough that a favorite simply gets to show up and collect the win.
But there is a difference between acknowledging that reality and allowing four games spread across almost two decades to convince yourself Boise State possesses some mysterious Oregon kryptonite.
There is no advanced metric for kryptonite. There are plenty for the actual football teams.
The roster-building gap might be the biggest change of all
This is where the larger transformation of college football becomes impossible to ignore. Boise State built its reputation during an era when programs could identify players the larger schools missed, develop those players for four or five years and eventually create a roster capable of beating more talented teams. Chris Petersen became one of the best coaches in college football by doing exactly that.
Those opportunities have not disappeared. Holding onto the players you develop, however, has become considerably harder. The transfer portal gives the biggest programs another avenue to address roster weaknesses every winter. NIL and revenue sharing give Power Four schools additional tools to retain established players and pursue proven ones somewhere else. Oregon can lose NFL talent and immediately attack the portal while continuing to stack highly rated recruiting classes behind it.
The Ducks are operating in a completely different roster-building environment than they were when Boise State first came to Autzen in 2008. That shows up everywhere on this roster.
Oregon can roll defensive linemen. The Ducks have multiple edge players they believe can affect the quarterback. They have experienced options throughout the secondary, a wide receiver room that spent August looking like one of the deepest positions on the roster and enough running backs that much of camp was spent determining how to distribute opportunities rather than wondering whether Oregon had someone capable of carrying the load.
Depth changes the math of a football game. Boise State needs its best players to play like its best players. Oregon has the ability to keep sending talented players onto the field until depth itself becomes part of the problem. That was not the relationship between these programs in 2008 or 2009.
Respect Boise State without fearing the history
There is a balance here, and that is probably where I have landed after spending the last few weeks thinking about this matchup. Oregon should absolutely respect Boise State. Danielson has built a good program. Boise State will be physical, organized and completely comfortable coming into Autzen with almost everybody expecting Oregon to win. The Broncos have enough experience and enough good players to punish the Ducks if Oregon comes out sloppy, particularly if the Ducks struggle to finish drives or give Boise State short fields.
Week 1 also has a way of exposing things nobody knew were problems in August. None of that requires pretending Kellen Moore is still the quarterback. It does not require imagining Jeanty standing in the backfield. And it certainly does not require treating the 2017 Las Vegas Bowl as evidence of something Oregon needs to overcome eight years and multiple coaching staffs later.
The history is real. So are the memories.
For anyone who watched the 2008 game or stayed up for that disaster on the blue turf a year later, there probably will always be something slightly uncomfortable about seeing Boise State across the field from Oregon.
I get that.
Two years ago did not exactly help. But when I look at the matchup we actually have Saturday, I see something very different. The Boise State teams that beat Oregon were much better relative to the Ducks than most people remember. The 2008 Broncos had an elite statistical profile. The 2009 team went undefeated and finished fourth in the country. The 2017 Ducks were caught between coaching staffs. The 2024 Broncos showed up with one of the best players in college football and eventually became a playoff team. Those were different Boise State teams.
More importantly, they were different Oregon teams.
Saturday is about Dante Moore, Dan Lanning’s roster and an Oregon defense that enters the season with national-championship expectations. It is about whether Boise State can consistently stay ahead of the chains against Oregon’s defensive front, whether Madsen can create explosive plays without Jeanty forcing the Ducks to devote extra bodies to the running game and whether Boise State has enough depth to hold up for four quarters if Oregon starts leaning on it.
That is the matchup.
Maybe that old Tegan and Sara song really does fit after all. We are still walking with the ghosts because that is what fans do. We remember the games that hurt, and sometimes those memories become part of how we see the next one. We just should not confuse the ghosts with the team coming through the tunnel Saturday.
Oregon should respect Boise State because of what the Broncos are now.
There is no reason to fear them because of what happened then.
